Amir Lawal

Criminal Investigator/Special Agent
Doral,FL

Summary

I am an experienced and dedicated Criminal Investigator with a strong foundation in law enforcement, intelligence, and cyber security. My goal is to further my career in federal criminal investigations, where I can apply my knowledge, professional training, and a track record of success in pursuing complex cases and upholding justice.

I currently serve as a Criminal Investigator (1811) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), bringing over five years of specialized experience at the GS-13 level. In this role, I have led investigations into both civil and criminal violations of federal wildlife laws, including the Lacey Act, Endangered Species Act, and Marine Mammal Protection Act. My duties have included conducting both covert and overt operations, collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, working closely with Assistant U.S. Attorneys, executing search warrants, and building strong interagency partnerships.

My professional development includes completion of the Wildlife Inspector Basic Course, the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP), and the FWS Special Agent Basic Training Program. These programs have equipped me with deep knowledge of Title 50 CFR and the broader legal and procedural framework of federal wildlife enforcement.

Prior to my current role, I served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard, where I gained foundational law enforcement training and pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Media, which enabled me to serve as a Public Affairs Specialist. I later enhanced my qualifications by earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Cyber Security and obtaining a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Master Captain license.

Throughout my career, I have demonstrated strong communication skills, adaptability, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement. My background spans project management, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration, all of which reinforce my dedication to advancing mission success through both tactical fieldwork and strategic planning. These qualities have shaped a work ethic rooted in diligence, thoughtfulness, and diplomacy—essential for navigating and resolving complex law enforcement challenges effectively.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak in further details with specific examples about how my experience, training, and passion can add value to your team and program.

Work History

Federal Criminal Investigator/Special Agent (1811)

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Office of Law Enforcement
09.2019 - Current
  • I currently investigate crimes that range from international wildlife smuggling to unlawful migratory game bird hunting. My current assignment in the FWS Region-4, Miami RAC district is in the manatee protection program. In this current position I utilize a vessel to routinely enforce manatee zones throughout the state of Florida. I routinely issue notice of violation tickets, attend court proceedings and serve issued bench warrants and work with other federal and state counterparts.
  • Like all criminal investigators, I collect evidence, interview witnesses, interrogate subjects, conduct surveillance, plan raids, make arrests, and help prepare cases for court. I work undercover to infiltrate wildlife trafficking rings, illegal guiding operations, and other criminal groups to document violations from the “inside.” Covert investigations can range from simple “buy-bust” transactions where agents arrange to purchase illegal wildlife from subjects to multi-year probes in which agents establish false identities and even run wildlife businesses to gain the confidence of the criminals they hope to expose. I have investigated the killing of endangered species and other protected wildlife, such as eagles, migratory birds, and marine mammals. They support species reintroduction programs and pursue cases involving the destruction or contamination of wildlife habitat. They investigate oil or chemical spills and poisoning incidents that kill wildlife.
  • Completed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Criminal Investigation Training Course in 2019 and completed the FWS Special Agent Basic Course, Department of the Interior's Motorboat Operator Certification Course and the Federal Law Enforcement Center's Survival and Tactics course.

  • Initiated and participating in multiple cross agency operations where I worked with Customs and Border Protection, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration law enforcement officer, U.S. Postal service agents and Homeland Security Investigation agents. These operations led to over a thousand joint proactive searches with multiple seizure including some narcotics and has led to some arrest and criminal convictions.
Established a proactive schedule to interdict illegal shipments and to implement a strong presence within the port of Miami's passenger and luggage ramp area, sea ports and parcel facilities.

  • Initiated inspection activities to detect violations of wildlife laws and regulations in accordance with established LE Priorities, which led to numerous seizures including some large seizures that have resulted in larger criminal investigations and arrest.
