Specimen collection and processing: Collect specimens following established protocols (e.g., drug screens, biometric screenings, insurance exams).
Data Entry & Order Management: Enter and verify patient registration details and test orders into laboratory systems, or requisition databases.
Compliance and Documentation: Review and verify patient demographic information (e.g., signatures, initials) post-venipuncture to ensure proper specimen labeling.
Training, Mentorship, and Communication: Complete required training, and stay updated on current phlebotomy practices.
Clerical and Operational Support: Support supervisors with the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for phlebotomy services.
Customer Service & Problem Resolution: Communicate professionally with clients, resolve or refer issues, document problems, and report critical situations.
Maintenance and Facility Upkeep: Ensure the cleanliness and good repair of facilities, reporting necessary repairs to leadership.
Point of Care (POC) Testing & Special Projects: Perform Point of Care testing, and ensure proper training and competency evaluations.
Venipuncture: Perform blood collection via vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods from veins.
Arterial Collection: Draw blood from arteries using appropriate arterial collection techniques.
Capillary Collection: Collect blood from capillaries via dermal puncture (e.g., heel or finger-stick methods).
Specimen Transport: Safely transport specimens and fluid samples from collection sites to laboratories.
Explain Procedures: Clearly explain collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
Testing and Analysis: Perform various laboratory tests, such as blood alcohol tests, blood cultures, oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), glucose screening, blood smears, and peak and trough drug level tests.
Biohazard Disposal: Properly dispose of contaminated sharps (e.g., needles, lancets) in accordance with safety protocols and legal requirements.
