I am an ATCK, having lived for five of my early childhood years in Malawi while my parents served there as missionaries. These early experiences, as well as my ongoing relationship with missionaries, has fostered a deep love for this community. During my second semester of college (Spring 2023), I studied abroad in London, England. While there, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants. I was able to fill intake forms, connecting patrons with the correct social workers to address their needs, and facilitate and participate in activities such as art and dance classes. I helped cook and serve lunch for the patrons, and connected with individuals through conversation. I treasure this experience and the people I met during this time. This past summer, I had the opportunity to spend a week in Dearborn, Michigan, working at an English and Math daycamp for Syrian refugee families. I helped pick up families and bring them to camp, teach English, and assist in math classes. I also helped facilitate our elective activities, such as art and building projects. Our team also visited some of the families in their homes, actively engaging in Syrian hospitality values. All of these experiences have added to the desire I have to serve these populations through my vocation.
