Forestry Apprentice - Tribal Lands Focused
Mancos Conservation District, Mancos CO June- August 2023
Completed a field apprenticeship in learning forest inventory and monitoring techniques and worked with the Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado Forest Restoration, and Mancos Conservation District on monitoring efforts. I carried out inventorying and monitoring on focused tribal land with Ute Mountain Ute Adams Ranch, which included land owned by state and private owners. Supported the development of an updated forest management plan for Adams Ranch and long-term monitoring connected to the forest restoration and wildfire migration project. Additionally, assisted with data entry and other projects with the Colorado State Forest Service.

A one-week summer enrichment program introduced the National Institutes of Health to biomedical research and healthcare careers for future academics and careers. Participated in science career workshops, interacted in selected NIH laboratories and clinical research settings, and received the knowledge of a science journal club, informational interviews, and professional networking opportunities throughout the week. I also met with students in the NIH SACNAS Chapter and learned about NIH internship opportunities.
Genomic Science and Leadership Initiative (GSLI) workshop

The goal of this workshop introduced the connection and importance of the natural world to molecular biology and genomics. Gained hands-on laboratory and computational experience to explore the presence of bacteria in environmental samples affected by mining contamination downstream of the Gold King Mine in Southwest Colorado. Experienced the latest DNA technologies, current computational biology tools, and data science methods to investigate the hidden world of microbial communities.
