Constructed a motorized bike powered by gas. Reprocessing a chainsaw engine from a junkyard, the goal was to design a mechanism that would supply a traditional bicycle with power from a two stroke engine. Constraints for the project included; making the mechanism universal for bikes, non destructive to the structural integrity of the bike, and allowing the bicycle to be pedaled whether the engine was on or off. Conceptualizing the design took time analyzing several different bikes and examining the chain-wheel hub system. Next, an early design was made using a truss system and simple analysis using statics to verify its feasibility. The design was finalized with an assembly cad rendering in solidworks to serve as a guide for fabrication. Using the Cal Poly workshop and scraps of metal, a prototype was completed and tested on a bike frame but was not successful in functioning consistently.
