General Duties
- Checking and recording of Vital Signs, detecting abnormalities, intervening, and alerting supervisors or physicians where necessary.
- Explaining procedures thoroughly to patients to allay fears and anxiety
- Educating patients on conditions, and treatment regimens and answering questions.
- Taking and recording patient medicals and surgical and social history.
- Collaborating with other Health Care personnel to administer effective patient care
- Safely administering physician-prescribed medication taking into consideration the right of medication.
- Assisting physicians, supervisors, and shift in-charges in procedures
- Writing and documenting of all procedures and updating them
MEDICAL NURSING (10 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- Formulating an ideal patient plan based on patient needs or assessment
- Preparing patients for medical examination and assisting in procedures as needed
- Performing wound care such as cleaning and bandaging
- Passing and removal of the catheter
- Transfusing of blood and observing all protocols
SURGICAL NURSING (10 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- Ensuring consent forms are signed
- Preparing patients for surgeries
- Setting up the operating room, making sure instruments are sterile
- Monitoring of patients, ensuring they are stable before transporting them to the ward
- Identify the patient's level of pain using the pain rating scale, intervene, and alleviate pain
PSYCHIATRIC NURSING (10 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- Assisting anaesthetics, and surgeons where needed in performing procedures.
- Assisting patients in performing activities of daily living (Bathing, grooming, and eating).
- Involving patients in recreational activities as a way of diversional therapy.
- Assisting in performing Mental Status Examination (MSE).
- Assist in facilitating topics inward and community visits.
- Going on home visits to check on client's progress, adherence to treatment regimen, motivate, take complaints, and remind them of the next appointment.
PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING DUTIES (10 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- The public health unit includes diabetic, hypertensive, antiretroviral, nutrition clinics, and family planning.
- Aid in assessing and meeting patient's nutritional needs
- Highlighting the significance of caring for hands and feet in diabetic patients
- Assist in scheduling appointment dates for patients, and ensuring follow-up visits.
- Help in receiving antiretroviral, diabetic, or hypertensive drugs for patients from the pharmacy.
- Counselling and preparing new clients for retrovirus testing, handing over newly diagnosed patients to physicians for medications to be prescribed immediately.
- Encouraging patients who have defaulted medications to start treatment as soon as possible.
- Education of client on family planning methods and assisting in family planning procedures
MATERNAL NURSING (10 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- Assist in preparing the mother for a safe delivery either by vagina or Caesarean section.
- Bathing of babies and administering of vitamin K injections for babies.
- Identifying high-risk neonates and transferring them to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
ANTENATAL CLINIC
- Assist in administering mothers' vaccine, and malaria prophylaxis.
- Assist in checking Symphysial Fundal Height (SFH) if it corresponds with gestational age.
- Informing patients on the need to eat a balanced diet, take pre-natal vitamins, malaria prevention, need to maintain good personal hygiene.
POST-NATAL CLINIC
- Give due vaccines for babies and notify the mother of the next vaccine date.
- Weighing of babies, identifying malnourished babies, and taking the needed action in conformance to hospital policies.
OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT NURSING DUTIES (2 WEEKS OF PRACTICE)
- Arranging patients for consultation, documenting vitals, and patient complains in a computerized system for physicians.
- Stabilizing patients (weak patients) in O.P.D rooms before proceeding to consultation
- Directing patients to appropriate places based on patient needs or inquiries.
- Setting up of wound dressing room, dressing wound, and preparing for instruments for sterilization.
