I grew up in a small agricultural community just west of La Joya called, Abram. I was raised by strong christian parents that instilled in us five siblings, four boys and myself, moral values of respect and integrity. So, being the only girl meant I had to join my brothers in their activities or be excluded. This led to my enjoyment of hunting, helping our dad with cattle, catching whatever fish were in the water holes, picking vegetables in neighboring fields and playing ball with my brothers.
I attended a Christian School, El Faro, from grades 1-8 and then moved on to La Joya High School. While attending LJHS, I participated in all female sports, was a cheerleader and joined every club possible.
This summer time with grandkids has been "Rancho Time," and also "Beach Time.". We BBQ at the rancho we set up swimming pools for kids outside, water slide, kids ride their bikes, hike, climb hay bales and help feed cattle.
Today, our young need to be encouraged, guided and provided with opportunities to go back to basics and value their environment by spending time participating and enjoying outdoor activities. My two sons were brought up enjoying outdoor activities and I want the same for my grandkids. As a matter of fact, we just returned from a RV camping trip with three granddaughters and one grandson. We swam, shimmied rocks on the lake, walked our dog, went hiking, and enjoyed a picnic by the lake.
