The NED aims to promote and strengthen democratic institutions and practices around the world through various means, including financial support to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), educational programs, and advocacy initiatives.

The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. It was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy with the goal of promoting world peace and friendship by sending American volunteers to work in developing countries.

  • Completed intensive Peace Corps technical training in Spanish literacy instruction, participatory community diagnostic techniques, and project monitoring and evaluation;
  • Formulated project plan for issue mitigation, and presented plan to school;
  • Selected project partners from community and school, following approval from project manager;
  • Taught children how to read in Spanish in local elementary school of Los Rios (Baoruco, Dominican Republic) for grades 1- 3 primarily;
  • Actively participated in staff meetings, contributing ideas for process improvement and program development strategies;
  • Facilitated community outreach to expand participation and support. Started an all-female soccer team consisting of girls of the community and the school. Won an out of town tournament with the team;
  • Water project: Tested water in the local community. Along with RPCVs, educated community members and students on simple water pasteurization techniques;
  • Assisted with special events and programs at the school. Supported engaging, and smooth-running events by helping with organization and planning;
  • Utilized interpersonal communication skills to convey information to others;
  • Educated young people about strategies for driving discussions and promoting social changes.
