I am writing this letter with questions in my mind. Why hasn’t anyone responded to my sons requests for mental health help? He submitted a mental health request a month ago at Staton. No one ever acknowledged receiving the request. He has submitted two at Elmore and received the same silent response. I have known for years something was wrong, but until I met the biological father I didn’t know what was going on. Help came to him through another inmate who observed his behavior and pulled him aside to discuss it with him. He explained that there was help. This inmate explained he was bipolar as well and receiving treatment.He also talked to me and I too told him I knew of the problem but did not know there was help in the prison system for him. It took me a while to persuade him to ask for help. Bennie always said I can handle it . But I know he can’t.His impulsive behavior has caused him problems throughout his years in prison. I encourage Bennie to call me everyday. I see that he has money on my home phone for him so I can monitor his moods. Within a short span of time he goes from euphoria to depression. This worries me.
