Summary

Dr. Berhanie has earned three degrees from Addis Ababa University: Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1997, M.A degree in Counseling Psychology in 2006, and PhD in Mental health Epidemiology in 2019. Since 1997 he has been engaged on his professional duties such as providing counseling and psychotherapy for people who needed the service in different institutions, including three universities and four child care institutions ( on per time bases). In addition, Dr. Berhanie has thought varieties of courses in psychology including counseling psychology, psychotherapy, advanced psychopathology, health psychology and developmental psychology to both undergraduate and graduate programs in different higher institutions, specifically in University of Gondar, Jimma University, Unity University as a full time instructor. In addition, Dr. Berhanie has been engaged on assessment and diagnosis, planning and implementation of career and vocational counseling, mental health intervention and psychosocial support, coordination and practicing counseling service to help young university students having multiple emotional and behavioral problems in different higher learning institutions, namely: University of Gondar, Jimma University and Unity University from 1998 to 2009. In addition , Dr Berhanie has been engaged in assessment, diagnosis, and research on mental health of Eritrean refugees living in Mai Aini camp for close to three years under the supervision of PhD dissertation advisor, professor Atalay Alem from Addis Ababa University and mentored by Dr. Peter Ventevogel, a senior mental health officer in UNHCR (based in Switzerland ) from 2013 to 2018 as part of his PhD dissertation field research work. Moreover, Dr. Berhanie Getnet is currently an assistant professor of mental health epidemiology at the department of psychiatry in college of medicine and health sciences. Besides his duties of engagement in the development of PhD curriculum and research advisement to graduate students, currently Dr. Berhanie is offering courses including advanced psychotherapy and psychosocial implications of mental health to post graduate students of mental health. Moreover, Dr. Berhanie is also working as senior consultant of psychotherapy in Gondar University Specialized Hospital and provide varieties of psychotherapeutic and psychosocial intervention services to the needy patients suffering from mental health problems.
