I was given the wonderful opportunity to be the test pilot at Spencer County EMS for their high school EMS program. During this testing phase I was assigned to a unit for 24-96 hours and was an additional pair of hands to not only help but also to gain critical knowledge before taking an EMT class. This time started my junior year when I was 17 and continued all the way through my EMT class which then placed me on a 911 ambulance 5 days after graduation. This also allowed me to acclimate and focus soley on patient care for two years, overall exceling my knowledge and training. In my personal opinion, this time spent before my EMT class was one of the reasons I was able to accomplish the NREMT at 70 questions.
This testing phase has now given other high school students in Spencer County an opportunity they wouldn't have had previously and is helping combat the EMS shortage. Needless to say Im proud to be apart of it.
