• I supervised eight reporters and edited their stories. Often, I edited articles written by reporters who weren’t on my team. I also wrote stories when I couldn’t find anyone to do them and wrote headlines and posted stories on the Omaha.com website. I helped plan what would be in the paper every day and budgeted stories for the Sunday papers, which is where we tried to put our best work. Throughout my time on the desk, I occasionally took on reporting roles.

• My most recent reporting gig was the medical beat at the OWH. I handled our Ebola coverage in 2014 and 2015 after the patients came to the Nebraska Med Center from Africa. Previously, I covered crime, public safety issues and the Omaha Public Schools. When I covered OPS, I was a “team leader,” which meant I wrote stories and edited education stories written by others on the team. I also edited our news columnists both when I was an editor and when I was a reporter.

When I worked on the copy desk, we were the last eyes on stories. We also wrote headlines and laid out the paper and trimmed stories to fit the space on the page. We then proofed printouts and made any necessary fixes.

• I switched to the assignment desk after starting in Melbourne as the county government reporter.

• I moved to the copy desk at the Tribune after starting as the city government reporter there. I also was sent to USA Today during my time in Fremont. I worked as a “loaner” at USA Today for about six months in 1986 before returning briefly to Fremont.
