In this community service project located in Mto Wa Mbu, a developing town in Arusha, Tanzania, myself and nine other peers collaborated with local stakeholders to organize a community-wide solid waste cleanup project. We were tasked with organizing logistics for trash pickup and transportation, creating posters and signs for sustainable solid waste management methods and advertisements for the cleanup project. Each of us lead a team of ten locals throughout the town who helped us pickup solid waste litter in hopes of promoting sustainable waste cleanup methods and community awareness of solid waste management.
The research I have conducted during my time in Tanzania primarily took place in Mto Wa Mbu, Arusha region. This study uses a standardized observational checklist, along with an interview, and literature reviews, to gather data and assess the current solid waste management practices in Mto Wa Mbu. By analyzing the waste management system in Mto Wa Mbu, this research aimed to highlight policy shortcomings, both governmental and community-based.
