Work History

Zookeeper / Office Administrator / Guest Services

Austin Aquarium
03.2021 - Current

As part of the mammal team, I am responsible for the daily care and wellbeing of over 20 exotic animals. My days consist of diet preparation, health checks, training, cleaning and sanitizing, and education to the public about the animals I care for.

  • I teach people of all ages about animals big and small, breaking through misconceptions and sharing love for creatures of all kinds. Memorizing facts and instructions to ensure every guest has a safe and exciting encounter.
  • Administering medication and basic first aid to both animals and humans. Doing daily body checks to ensure health and happiness.
  • Preparing diets each day for each animal, catering to their specific needs: what kinds of food, how much, and what will supply them with the best nutrition.
  • Training each animal each day to continue to build bonds and a trust account with the animals. Many skills go into this: patience, a keen memory, problem-solving, and constant attention, as well as reading the animal and their behavior.
  • Each exhibit must be cleaned every day, as well as preparation areas. Sanitizing and preparing the areas for the safety of both humans and animals in the area.
  • I also interact with dozens of other species, from reptiles to birds to marine life! I have assisted in the husbandry for these creatures on many occasions.

As the Office Administrator, I am responsible for handling customer concerns and general office duties.

  • Answering emails in a professional and kind way, and forwarding them to the appropriate department.
  • Handling customer concerns over the phone and in person, and leaving them content and satisfied with our service. Multi-tasking comes into play here very thoroughly.
  • Filing and handling important paperwork, including physical and digital copies.
  • Working in many systems online, including Sheets, Excel, and Docs. If I am looking for an answer to working with these, I will find it.
  • Overseeing customer information, forms, and inventory.

As part of the guest services team, I am the first person guests see as they enter!

  • Ensuring guests have a wonderful first impression of the company.
  • Handling cash and card for a POS system, and assuring detail and accuracy.
  • Upselling encounters, as well as annual and monthly memberships.
  • Personalizing the experience for each guest.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with regular guests.
  • Handling concerns and finding solutions to keep guests satisfied.

Every day brings new challenges and new solutions to those challenges, and I enjoy problem-solving to find the best resolution.
