My job was to be a center medical specialist at a plasma donation facility which implies a multitude of tasks including verifying whether a donor will be suitable to be able to donate, performing physicals, inputting patient information into the system, counseling donors if they are not suitable, explaining why they aren’t suitable, explaining what they might be able to do to become eligible, and responding to and treating donors who are having adverse reactions to having their plasma taken. To become a center medical specialist, I first had to be able to know how to work the donor floor which includes setting up the machines so the phlebotomist can stick the donor, disconnecting the donor from the machine and bandaging the donor up, and manage minor reactions that do not require CMS. Secondly, I had to work up front where a donor center technician would normally check the donors’ basic vital signs, hematocrit levels, and protein levels to determine if they are suitable to donate that day. I also manage the front desk to check donors in and answer the phone to answer potential and return donors’ questions. Donors must be a minimum of 18 years old and no older than 67.
