LEADERSHIP

  • As a Field Training Officer for four years, Ive led many trainees by teaching them to police safely and efficiently. The most important thing you must do is learn to trust others. You must have the ability to trust that your trainee will do the right thing and that you have the self-assurance to correct an issue. You must also humble yourself, be a leader, and recognize that your way isnt the only way to learn from anyone, and that in this job, you never stop learning. As a leader, Ive also had to show empathy. We are all human and make mistakes. We all have our issues, and you must help your trainees stay focused on the task at hand, reminding them that a single mistake can be very costly in the field.
  • As a leader, you must also realize that all Trainees learn at different speeds, and its important not to compare them. In the past, Ive had to build extreme patience and learn how to adapt to trainees with different learning styles. The role of a Field Training Officer has been a gratifying experience for me. It feels good to see your trainees advance and be recognized for their hard work ethic due to your influence on them, and I would like to do the same as a Sergeant with the Birmingham Police Department.
