I started my Nursing journey on the Observation Unit at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo as a Nursing Assistant/HUC in May of 2014. During my time as a Nursing Assistant, I also worked many shifts in the Rehab Unit and the Emergency Room. The summer of 2016, I completed my nursing Internship through Sanford Health with their Oncology Unit. I completed my nursing Practicum in the spring of 2017 with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which was also through Sanford Health. In May of 2017, I graduated with my BSN from the University of Jamestown and my RN career started the same year with the Oncology Unit/7S at Sanford Health. Over the past six (6) plus years I have not only enhanced my clinical, informal, and formal leadership skills. I am now one of the most senior nurses in our department and was chosen to be a clinical care leader for over three (3) years. I have mentored/coached many new employees in the preceptor role, I am actively involved in the Oncology Unit Based Council, and actively involved in our chemotherapy group. Currently I am attending North Dakota State University in pursuit for a degree in Doctor of Nursing Practice.
My professional achievements include the “Helping Hands Award”, Chemotherapy Immunotherapy-ONS/ONCC certification, OCN certification, Hero award under advancement, nursing award nominations under structural empowerment, and a “Good Catch Safety Award”.
As a CCL I am a formal clinical leader with a good portion of my shifts being in the charge nurse role. I’m there to a clinical resource to my fellow nurses and the patient care technicians on shift. I help coordinate admissions, discharges, and patient assignments. Coach and educate staff to make sure policy and procedures are being followed. Deal with conflict management, de-escalation of both patients and staff, and coordinating care. I assume delegated administrational tasks from my management. Help with delegation and other day to day operations.
As a RN on the Oncology Unit, I am responsible for providing exceptional quality of care to my patients and their families. I am accountable the patient’s cares including but not limited to providing their medications, coordinating medical care, administering blood products, notifying physicians of changes with the patients, and performing certain medical procedures such as draining pleurx drains. I have reached the highest clinical lane on my unit, allowing me to care for the sickest/potential IMC status patients on our floor. I am fully signed off to transfuse allogenic stem cells, autologous stem cells, and CART infusions. I am STEM and REMs trained, allowing me to take care of our bone marrow patients and CART patients. Chemotherapy administration and monitoring.
As a Nursing Assistant, I assumed the responsibility delegated to me by the RN such as taking patient’s vital signs, hourly care rounding, answering call lights, and assisting patients with their needs. I also perform blood glucose checks and bladder scans as delegated. I also assumed the Unit Secretary role which includes a variety of roles to ensure patients are admitted, transferred and discharged in a safe manner. In this role, I would also assist the RNs with the admission and discharge processes and my Nursing assistants partners with their accountabilities.
As a building attendant, I was responsible to ensure the space that was rented was clean before the renters arrived. I ensure the renters followed the rules of the space. After the event, I would clean up the space, submit a report, and ensure it was ready for the next renter.
