Artist Statement
My artistic practice centers around the theme of birds, particularly Budgies and Monk parrots. Through a series of “Feathered Buds,” I capture the beauty and character of budgies, which have been a part of my Jamaican family for many years. I used acrylic paints for the series of birds. In addition to the portraits, I also create sculptures of Monk parrot nests “Nests 1,2 & 3” using the twisted paper. Unlike the Budgies in my portraits, these parrots are not native to the United States and have instead escaped from captivity. Later, in 2010, the monk parrots used telephone poles to build their nests, which was demolished by the United Lighting Company, resulting in the death of 180 parrots. My philosophy of art does center around environmentalism reflecting my appreciation for nature. Including all the trees people randomly cut down, I do believe most of the animal extinction and the damage to the environment was caused by humans. We should be helpful towards the animals and not be against them since we are all one with earth. I went to Paier College with zero experience with oil paints. I had to get extra help from my professors to improve which helped me be skillful in my major. I ended up being the only Fine Arts student to graduate, recognized for my determination. Through my art, I aim to encourage viewers to consider our responsibility towards the environment and to appreciate the natural world while understanding that we are all connected.
