• Throughout nursing school, I have learned that challenges are inevitable, but how we approach them defines our growth as nurses. One of the most impactful examples occurred during my surgical rotation when I was scrubbed in for a pediatric orthopedic procedure. Midway through the case, the patient’s blood pressure dropped unexpectedly. The atmosphere in the OR shifted immediately, and as a student, I felt the weight of the moment.
• Instead of freezing, I focused on staying calm, listening closely to the circulating nurse, and anticipating what might be needed next. I reminded myself that composure and communication are as vital to patient safety as clinical skills. The team worked seamlessly to stabilize the patient, and I learned firsthand how critical it is to rely on teamwork and clear direction in high-pressure situations.
• That experience shaped how I manage challenges both in and outside the clinical setting. I have developed strategies such as pausing to assess before reacting, asking questions when uncertain, and maintaining open communication with colleagues. I also practice self-reflection after stressful situations to identify what went well and what could be improved.
• This approach has allowed me to grow more confident. I’ve learned that challenges are not setbacks, but rather they are opportunities to strengthen my skills, deepen my empathy, and confirm my commitment to becoming the kind of nurse patients and teams can depend on.
