Skills Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients during admission, transfer and discharge from ICU
  • Family and patient education
  • Electronic documentation, via CERNER.
  • Conduct physical assessment of patient using the nursing process.
  • Perform head to toe assessment (inspect, palpate, auscultate, and percuss).
  • Assess patients GCS and conscious level.
  • Monitor patient sedation and relaxant level, using BIS monitor and train of four.
  • Monitor and provide specialized care for critically ill patients being mechanically ventilated – modes used include CPAP, SPONT, SIMV, and AC Mode
  • Oxygen delivery in addition to ventilator including T-piece, non - rebreather bag, rebreather bag, simple face mask, nasal cannula. Venturi mask
  • Monitoring and care of External Ventricular Drain and ICP monitoring
  • Mechanical ventilation Positive Pressure Ventilation with Facemask and Bag-valve Device
  • Endotracheal suctioning
  • Pleural tube monitoring and care
  • Assistance with orotracheal intubation
  • Peripheral IV cannulation
  • Central venous catheter (CVC) care
  • Central venous pressure (CVP) monitoring via transducer
  • Arterial line care, Arterial Blood Gas sampling and interpretation
  • Management of inotropes and monitoring via medication pump for hemodynamic stability

  • Inotropes: nor- adrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine, milrinone, dopamine, ephedrine, phenylephrine.
  • Antiarrhymics: lidocaine, amiodarone, adenosine
  • Antihypertensive: beta blockers, alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ace inhibitors
  • Anti-seizure medications: Dilantin, Epilim, phenobarbitone, Tegretol, Keppra
  • Sedatives: versed, valium, propofol, ketamine, Precedex.
