*Conducted telephone triage by assessing symptoms during patient calls, directing urgent cases to ER, scheduling appointments for necessary follow-ups or EKGs, and providing clear recommendations based on patient needs.
*Medication refills-patients call in and ask for refills, leave messages on the refill line letting us know they need refills, or we receive faxes for refills. Following standing orders, refill as appropriate based on criteria for each medication.
Explained tilt test procedure, applied EKG leads to patient, placed BP cuff on arm and finger, started IV, and took vitals every 5 minutes during test. Monitored patient symptoms and ran 6-second strip for provider's review. Recovered patient before discharge home.
*Coordinated cath packets by preparing detailed instructions for patients undergoing procedures in the cath lab, ensuring clarity on medication adjustments, NPO status, procedure details, and recovery expectations while collaborating with multiple departments for seamless patient care.
*Nurse Visits-Patients are scheduled to come back to see a nurse for a follow up on their BP to assess whether, or not, their medication needs further titration. Vitals are taken each nurse visit, last office visit charting is consulted and used for documenting nurse visit.
*Direct admits-Patients are directly admitted from the clinic, sometimes. An IV must be started, house supervisor must be called for a room assignment, SBAR filled out for calling report to receiving unit, and transporting patient on monitor for heart rate and rhythm with a second nurse to room after faxing SBAR and calling report.
*Managed task box communications by coordinating patient follow-ups on lab results, health status checks, medication updates, and referrals, ensuring timely responses to patient needs and alerting providers of pertinent information.
*Rooming patients-called patients back, took their vitals, confirmed their medication list was correct in the computer, asked why we were seeing them at that appt, let the provider know they were ready
*Phone triage-Patients assessed for symptoms that would need follow up with a provider sooner than their appt, or if they needed medication changes.
*Called patients with test results, communicated medication changes as directed by provider.
*Medication refills-Providers would order medications to be continued for one year at visit and give nursing order to send them to pharmacy
*Administered immunizations using sterile technique, monitored patients for adverse reactions, and provided education on post-injection care.
*Performed ear lavage using saline to remove ear wax, monitored patients for dizziness or unsteadiness post-procedure.
*Entered medication orders accurately based on provider instructions-Orders entered as given per provider or using standing orders for medication refills
Coordinated shift patient assignments for nursing staff and provided bedside support with position changes, medication witnessing, and delivery-room newborn intake. Managed emergency coverage by assigning first assistant when scrub tech staffing was limited and organized furloughs during low-census periods. Oversaw fetal heart rate monitoring throughout unit and directed nurses to respond or stepped in with support as needed.
*Labored women-watched monitor for fetal heart tracing in relation to contraction pattern, assessed strength of contractions, performed sterile vag exams and determined dilation and effacement of cervix, if membranes had ruptured spontaneously, if delivery was imminent, and baby was vertex. Started IV and drew blood for required labs, assisted with epidural placement watching vitals and keeping patient focused and calm. Placed foley catheter using sterile technique after epidural was effective. If induction, started pitocin and maintained titration per protocol, then increased it after delivery to help control bleeding. Performed fundal massage per protocol until patient was transferred to post partum unit.
*Assisted with newborn care immediately after delivery-received babies at delivery drying them and warming them under the warmer, obtaining vitals, weighing and measuring them, giving them vitamin K injection, swaddling them, or placing skin to skin with mother, if desired, assisted with breast feeding when needed
*C section-Prep and assist surgeon before and in OR if surgery necessary. Recover patient for two hours.
*Triage nurse-monitor patients for a period of time to determine if in labor.
*Staff RN-Assessed patients comprehensively, monitored surgical incisions and fractures pre- and post-operatively, set up traction for newly admitted patients, measured drainage output, tracked dressing changes, recorded intake and output, assisted with ambulation devices, performed IV starts and foley catheter placements, and conducted neuro checks for patients with spinal injuries.
*Charge nurse-Assigned patients to staff based on acuity and experience, provided direct patient care when needed, led team during short staffing, placed orders, managed admissions on night shift, created patient charts, assisted with patient mobility and toileting, and coordinated staffing based on census.
Provided guidance and support to new RNs during orientation.-Designed training for new RNs, guiding them through essential skills in Ortho, including sterile dressing changes, wound debridement, and effective communication with providers, patients, and families.

I am a Registered Nurse who loves the diversity nursing provides. Corrections nursing is an area new to me and I'm loving it! I learn something new every day. I was so nervous, but feel like I'm settling into the new role just as I have settled in to living in Alaska. It's a new season of life for me, trying new things, and finding out I like them. I would really love the opportunity to move into a full time role as a Corrections nurse and being part of a team.
