Music Composer

Jacksonville University
03.2024 - 03.2024
  • "Cycles", was my second work to be premiered during my time as a student for our annual New Music Concert. It was a string trio, that had been in the works for around 6 months.
  • Program Notes
  • Cycles (Chandler Bartley)
  • This idea of this piece was conceived during a conversation amongst a close friend. He was brainstorming ideas for a novel he was currently writing. He was trying to come up with a melody for the song of liberty of the rebels in his book. A lullaby turned into an anthem of freedom. At that moment, I immediately hung up the phone on him (sorry again) and started writing. What began as a simple song for a book turned into a massive project. This was my first ever composition to be published. Cycles is a two-movement work filled with beauty, suspense, and triumph. What starts as a beautiful tune quickly becomes one that is ever changing, but that main idea is still there. It is a metamorphosis of sorts, one of life, death, and rebirth. Close your eyes and think of a time in your life where you had to mature and grow. This is something we can all relate to, the ups and downs of life. No matter how desperate a situation looks, in the end the sun still rises every morning (paraphrasing Ecclesiastes 1:5). Presenting the debut of my first work, this is “Cycles”.

  • "The Iron Whale", was a brass quintet written for our annual Black History Month at JU. It was my first ever work to be premiered. I had the honor of conducting our very talented Honors Brass Quintet.
  • Program notes:
  • The Iron Whale (Chandler Bartley)
  • I just couldn't get this melody out of my head, for almost a week I just kept humming this same tune everywhere I went. I finally relented and began writing. This Brass Quintet is a homage to my days in marching band and wind band during secondary school and college. This is where it all started for me. My passion for music began here and with the guidance of my high school band director. Would you believe me if I told you the original name of this piece was, “Brass Quintet in D” (thrilling), the name of the Iron Whale is thanks to my little sister, Miya. She gave the Quintet a listen and blurted out “Iron Whale”. It reminded her of a stand tune “Iron Man” and the old sea shanty “The Wellerman”, Inquisitively, I ponder and with that “The Iron Whale” was born. The whale itself is represented by the Horn and Tuba who play the two main themes of the piece. This funky piece will leave you feeling groovy and with a possible metaphorical worm in your ear (discretion is advised, you've been warned!).
