Ever since I was seven years old, surfing has been the Ikigai, or driving force, in my life. The passion I have for surfing has fueled endless hours of training, practice and competition that have qualified me to compete for the World Surfing League and national regional leagues such as the National Surfing Scholarship Association (NSSA), Eastern Surfing Association (ESA), and multiple other series and pro-amateur contests. Competition in these various leagues involves a year-round commitment, requiring a great deal of dedication, travel and practice. Although I have been blessed to have the support of administration, my commitment to the sport and to my academic achievement has left little time for involvement in school-sponsored clubs and organizations. My achievements related to surfing include competitive recognition for numerous East Coast Competitive Surfing titles and the luxury of sponsorships by companies such as Imperial Motion whose clothing and wetsuits I represented and Wilmington’s own Savage Surfboards, whose boards I surf exclusively in all my events. Surfing has always been a lifeline for me, providing me insight for how I structure myself with my schoolwork, training, social life, relationships and family. As stated by Andy Irons, “I surf because it keeps my life at an even keel; without it I would tip into the oblivion.” Surfing is the biggest part of my identity and is truly what I live for. Surfing has especially allowed me access to the same skill sets that may apply to my snowboarding and skateboarding which has in hand made me very talented at both sports.
Aside from surfing, I am very involved in my local church, Swansboro United Methodist, at which I volunteer around our community with constantly along with taking mission trips such as Appalachia Service Project (ASP) where we go out to the Appalachia Mountains for a week during each summer and rebuild the houses of those in need.
