  • Performs duties to verify that officially inspected slaughter and/or processing establishments are operating in compliance with regulations to ensure the production of safe food. The establishments operate under one or more Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans(s) and the incumbent verifies that the plans are properly designed and executed to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide temporary coverage for other assignments, which could require performing in-plant inspections in a wide range of, and different types of slaughter and processing plants involving an extensive variety of operations. Responsible for performing domestic, import and export inspection duties by applying the inspection methods, determining compliance with requirements, documenting findings, and initiating regulatory control action.
  • Verifies compliance with SPS regulatory requirements, on an on-going basis, by verifying that an establishment is operating in a manner sufficient to prevent insanitary conditions or adulterated product. Verification activities typically involve directly observing the conditions in the establishment such as: an establishment's pest control practices and proper use of pest control substances, maintenance of the grounds and buildings, lighting and ventilation, plumbing and sewage systems, water supply and use/reuse of water or other solutions, condition and practices related to the use of dressing rooms and lavatories, condition of and use of equipment and utensils, facility and equipment construction, and employee hygiene. Initiates the appropriate regulatory controls to gain regulatory compliance. Coordinates the frequency of verifying SPS regulatory requirements with their supervisor.
  • When an incidence of noncompliance is identified, documents non-compliance with one or more regulatory requirements and completes a non-compliance record (NR) through PHIS; identifies trends of non-compliance and determines NR linkage; and recommends enforcement action following the Rules of Practice.
  • Prepares NRs to document non-compliance with regulatory requirements through PHIS. Assesses the adequacy of the plant's corrective and/or preventative action. Reviews plant HACCP, sanitation, and microbial sampling records to observe for and identify compliance trends. Upon identifying repeated or systemic problems indicating that further corrective measures are warranted, refers issue to the supervisor or Frontline Supervisor (FLS) for potential further action according to Rules of Practice. If necessary, temporarily withholds use of marks of inspection or takes regulatory control action on product or facilities.
  • Document non-compliance with regulatory requirements through PHIS. Assesses the adequacy of the plant's corrective and/or preventative action. Performs post-mortem inspection of livestock and poultry carcasses to ensure that no pathological or insanitary condition renders the product unfit for human consumption.
