Private Military Contractor
Triple Canopy
05.2009 - 10.2013
Continued Contract with Triple Canopy after Blackwater Worldwide was released from the WPPS II contract in May 2009.
As TST/CAT Vehicle Commander, I am responsible for maintaining accountability to all sensitive items assigned to my vehicle and individual team. I am responsible for 18 personnel working under me, and am responsible for making a weekly schedule for the 18 personnel, in a total of 6 different missions.
Additional support function not executed during the Blackwater Contract is a 24/7 12 personnel strong QRF for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In response to specific threats on the compound, we are tasked with a small counter attack force on the compound. Duties also include Search and Rescue in the event of a Mass Casualty situation, Immediate Medical Support, and MEDEVAC/CASEVAC if required.
Operate in a Counter Assault Team function, as CAT Commander, when requested by Regional Security Officers from other DoS teams operating in the AOR. Primary duties as Counter Assault are to be first responders to any attack on the motorcade while en-route to or from venues, and maneuver our element of 5 personnel, capable of mass, accurate firepower, to dissuade attackers/potential attackers in the event of an altercation with hostile forces. CAT provides a safe stand-off distance between attack/contact and the Escort Team, essentially creating a buffer zone to allow the escorting team to safely withdraw from the contact area. After facilitating a safe withdrawal of the Principle Team, CAT is then reintegrated with the motorcade and continues movement to a safe haven. In the event of a mechanical failure with any vehicles in the Principle Team, or if a vehicle went down due to enemy contact, CAT provides immediate evacuation of wounded/Principle if possible. If not possible, CAT then is responsible for securing the area and suppressing threats until the main TST element arrives. As CAT operators, we utilize a Heavy CAT package in M1116 HMMWVs with turret gunners equipped with M240Bs, or a lower profile (discreet) Armored Suburban configuration with a mounted M249 SAW in the rear window and a dismounted M249 SAW gunner.
Operate on a Tactical Support Team/Counter Assault Team (TST/CAT) as Vehicle Commander for the Command Vehicle. I maintain a Lenco Generation II “Bearcat” armored vehicle and conducted training for all Command (CMD) personnel on vehicle operation and individual responsibilities, to include positions; as Fire Team members, Turret Gunners, and Drivers, to ensure proficiency in all areas of our broad mission spectrum.
Developed new Standard Operating Procedures as the situation dictated by the Department of State changed. These new SOPs included low profile operations, advanced close quarters battle operations, long range movement plans, base defense, and embassy evacuation plans.
We train with K9 handlers and their Detection Dogs to maintain the capability of effective K9 deployment and recovery on venues and crisis sites.
Our team conducts professional Tactical Transport (TTT) of COM personnel and OGA’s to the Baghdad International Airport, directs sites and other venues throughout Baghdad to include sites of recent attacks and meetings with Distinguished Visitors (DVs) and Congressional Delegations (CODELs).
Qualify, as per the Department of State standards, on a variety of weapons systems, quarterly, to include; M4 Carbine, Glock 19, Remington 870, M249 SAW, and the M240B GPMG.
As a Team, we conduct sustainment training on weapons systems which entailed shooting on the move, firing from barricades, vehicle turret gunnery, and low profile (concealed) rifle and pistol scenarios.
For our DART/PRE missions, we train on rotary wing fire team operations in Bell 412 Medium Lift Aircraft to ensure maximum mission capability, as well as ground to air signaling and communications of aircraft. Collectively, we train in areas necessary to safely and effectively call in rotary wing aircraft support for Route Reconnaissance, MEDEVAC/CASEVAC and Direct Support Operations, as well as Helicopter Landing Zone (HLZ) identification for Bell 412s, 214s, and the MD 500 “Little Bird” aircraft.
Our unit maintains a 24 hour Quick Reactionary Force for all Department of State PSD teams, and we track these teams as they operate in the Baghdad AOR via radio communication and Blue Force Tracker systems located in our Tactical Operations Center (TOC).
We provide a 4 personnel strong element to safely escort COM personnel on transport busses within the International Zone, to and from living quarters and work areas.
Operated as the Tactical Commander for my most current team, a Long Range, Provincial Movement Escort team operating in the more distant locations of Iraq, and not specifically Baghdad. As Tactical Commander, I performed all route planning, communications and signal planning, as well as was responsible for the tactical movement and safe return of all equipment, personnel and protectees. In addition to these duties, I conducted training on small unit tactics, individual movement techniques, and communications. Additionally, as the Tactical Commander I was charged with all communication with military units in our area of operations, supporting teams, and other local Iraqi Government assets as well as other US Government assets in our region.
