Artistic Experience

  • I've continued to paint, primarily in oils, in a standard range of subject matter, urban scenes, portraits, still life...submitting some pieces on occasion to your own yearly members show. I've had two 'one person' exhibits at Gallery 51, at 51 N. 2nd. St. in Philadelphia, Old City. Incredibly, I even have a small children's book illustration to my credit, Angelita Y La Cabra Del Barrio, (Angelita and the Goat from the Barrio). This was published in Colombia, in Spanish.
  • Over the past few years, my interest in urban scenes has been the most evident in my work. Portraiture and still life are equally compelling to me, but most of what I've sold, anyway, has been in this category. And, too, with each occasion I have to ride, or walk around in the city, it becomes apparent that the subject is really inexhaustible. So, obviously, I'll continue in this.
  • There has been one condition, though, imposed by circumstance, which it would be my intention to change if the opportunity to be artist in residence did arise. I've worked from photographs, almost exclusively, in both portraiture and urban landscapes. While it doesn't seem feasible to abandon this approach with the urban scenes, in portraiture I'd love nothing more than to be able to work with a model. Drawing, painting, even, yes, sculpture if possible. Still life, of course, is also something to expand upon, (not, of course from photos). Lately, something else has grabbed my interest...and has, I think the potential for a fascinating experience. Small dioramas, again, of urban scenes. There are a few artists who are working in this area. (Joshua Smith is the first that comes to mind, though I've also come upon something called Magic Town, in Colorado Springs...Michael Garman, artist, (whew!). It could be, after all, beyond my means, for now anyway, but it certainly would be something I'd approach with enthusiasm.
