EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • 1. Curriculum/Course Development
  • Revised the following: syllabi, objectives, lesson plans, teaching materials, and lab instruction for the following courses utilized in the Mayo Radiography Program:
  • Skeletal Anatomy This course introduces and reviews skeletal anatomy concepts to the students. It covers osteology, basic features, building blocks of bones, and basic terminology as well as review of each individual bone and basic anatomy. The course was provided using an unpublished text written by Myke Kudlas M.Ed. RT(R)(QM) and illustrated by Craig St. George RT(R)(VI).
  • Chest and Abdominal Radiography This course instructs the students in anatomical and positioning concepts necessary to produce quality chest and abdominal radiographs. Classroom discussion along with lab practice is employed in the teaching of this course. Each year the curriculum endures slight revisions and continues to receive excellent marks from the students.
  • Skeletal Radiography This course instructs the students in anatomy, pathology, radiographic imaging techniques, and modifications necessary for routine and trauma projections. The following anatomy is covered: ribs, sternum, cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, sacrum, and coccyx. Lab practice is included for this course.
  • Pediatric Radiography This course was revised by Program Director Myke Kudlas in 2004 evolving into a Problem Based Learning format. The students are placed in small groups for some learning exercises and large groups for others. They are required to orally present information concerning the pediatric patient to their fellow classmates. Our role as their instructor is to guide them in the proper direction of study rather than to simply deliver answers to them. Through student research this course covers anatomy specific to the pediatric patient, common diseases and abnormalities, and exams. Shielding, immobilization, and radiation protection techniques are stressed in this course. Proper communication and approaching the pediatric patient is also addressed.
  • Interventional Radiography This course presents an overview of the equipment used and procedures performed in a special procedure suite. Anatomy review is extensive to include arterial and venous systems of the brain, heart, abdomen, and extremities. Procedures and interventions will include neuro, cardiac, vascular and non-vascular radiography. Indications and contraindications for each procedure mentioned in this course will be addressed to better inform the students about patient care in the interventional department.
  • Skull Radiography This course presents in depth studies of the anatomy for the human skull as is pertinent to radiography/imaging sciences. Pathology, radiographic imaging techniques, and modifications for routine & some trauma projections are also offered. Skull radiography is becoming less of a requirement in the diagnostic radiology department. Therefore, the lessons are designed to be very hands-on and lab-oriented learning experiences in hopes of ensuring an increased comfort level of students in the clinical setting. This course has been revised annually in accordance with increased understanding of complications students face in learning the subject.
  • Computed Tomography This is a 2-hour basic CT course aimed to educate the student about the history/ generations of CAT scanners and their development into CT. Discussion about the design of individual scanners and the personnel behind the discovery is implemented. Simple physics dealing with image acquisition and image quality is presented. Pertinent anatomy for a CT scan of a brain, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis is also taught.
  • Patient Care for Radiographers In conjunction with other program staff, created syllabi, lesson plans, tests, and objectives for 6 hours of this course. This course will introduce the new radiography student to basic patient care skills and managing patients both in and out of the radiology department. One lesson was created and devoted to radiographic anatomy and critique identifying common tubes and lines seen and cared for in the clinical area. Another lesson was created and devoted to the transfer of patients in the radiology department and out of their wheelchairs/ on and off their stretchers. Proper lifting techniques and ergonomics were also addressed.
  • 2. Teaching Activities / Skills
  • Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences Working at Mayo Clinic and Mayo Hospital, I supervise the students in the clinical areas of diagnostic radiography, GI radiography, emergency radiography, and mobile radiography. (Instruction is given in the areas of positioning, setting technical factors, film review and patient care).
  • In the classroom setting, I utilize the following teaching methods: lecture, multi-media (including video and PowerPoint presentation), Lab instruction (including positioning practice and adaptation for trauma views) small group activities, discussion, and student pathology presentations. Radiographic anatomy, technical factors, and film critique is stressed in the positioning courses.
  • Course # Credits Name Years of Instruction

  • MYO 2309 1 Computed Tomography 2
  • MYO 1204 1 Skull Radiography 6
  • Radiography Orientation (2004-2008). This section is for preparation and orientation of new students to the MSHS, Mayo Clinic Florida Radiography Program and Mayo Clinic Florida
  • Policies and procedures. It also includes information on the program, clinic student services, benefits, and working environments. All materials were substantially revised by the Mayo Radiography Program, Rochester. In addition, each year the program has changed or updated policies, clinical rotation schedules, and clinical paperwork. A new addition (as of January 2007) to the orientation process referred to as “Training Camp” gives the students a hands-on look at basic equipment and operations for radiographers. These lessons include tube & table functions, positioning devices, control console, integrated image processor, PSPs, basic tomography, fluoroscopy, contrast media, C-arm operation, portable radiography, and reading RIMS requisitions.
  • Interventional Radiography As an IR technologist I worked with Mayo Radiography Program students in the IR department. This included patient care techniques, the use of monoplane and bi-plane fluoroscopic units, proper sterile technique in an angiography suite, description of procedures performed daily in the IR department, + anatomy & physiology.
  • Basic Life Support February 2005 – 2009; this includes certification to new Mayo Clinic Radiography Program students and continues year-round for department of radiology personnel in need of re-certification. The course is offered to all radiologic students, technologists, nurses, physicians, residents and fellows of radiology.
  • Nursing In-service (Walker Auditorium – Davis 1 Mayo Clinic) A Powerpoint presentation was arranged by multiple Mayo Clinic radiography personnel to include myself (special thanks to Robert A. Pooley PhD.) with the intent to expand the knowledge of Mayo Clinic staff RN’s in basic radiographic processes. My position was the discussion of “Image Acquisition & Contrast” pertaining to diagnostic radiology, CT, MRI, and Nuclear Medicine/ PET imaging. Pertinent terminology and the difference between image contrast and contrast media was covered. Also, there were many slides depicting the type of image that each modality and the department of the body in which it was acquisitioned.
  • Interim Program Director: Mayo School of Health Sciences Radiography Program Accepted responsibilities in program assessment and site visit preparation for the VA, State of Florida, and JRCERT representatives; scheduled clinical rotations and didactic courses for staff and students; expedited the application and interview process for incoming radiology students. It was necessary to assure that the program and the students would continue to continue successfully during the transition of program directors.
  • Pain Clinic Technician In-service – Radiography Basics A lesson was created to provide the pain clinic technicians with some basic knowledge of radiography and the cathode ray tube. Topics such as radiation protection, image acquisition, technical factors, the C-arm, spinal anatomy, and spinal radiography were discussed. The objective was to increase the comfort level of staff who are not educated in the practices of radiology but spend a great deal of time in procedures requiring fluoroscopic guidance. A similar in-service is provided to newly hired Interventional Radiology nurses excluding the spinal anatomy & spinal radiography sections.
  • Staffing to Workload Collaborative February 18, 2010, April 16, 2010, June 09, 2010, August 20, 2010 A comprehensive look at the staffing model of the organization. As the team leader I was challenged to develop guidelines, techniques, and competencies with the aid of my team members consisting of radiology department supervisors. The presentation was well accepted and successful as Mayo Clinic Florida administrative groups have taken interest in our initiatives. It is the expectation of this group that said initiatives can be established and adopted throughout the organization and possibly the enterprise.
  • Program Development The Vascular Interventional Radiologic Technology Internship (VIRTI) was created to provide graduates of the MSHS Radiography Program with the opportunity to study a supplementary modality and to achieve a second certification in the imaging sciences. It has since reached out to radiography graduates nationwide. The program sustained through much adversity including insufficient allocated time to prepare and coordinate educational activities. The program’s success is a milestone for Mayo Clinic Radiography history. Attempts were made to develop internships for magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. Further discussion included branching out to develop an internship in quality management and mammography as well. Met with similar adversity to the VIRTI internship these programs were proposed but never developed prior to my termination of employment with Mayo Clinic Florida.
