- Coordinates and directs the activities of a designated unit within an assigned section of a major division of the Police Division. Activities of the unit are administered according to established policies and procedures. Reviews case files, makes work assignments according to case type, and prepares reports on the unit's operational effectiveness.
- Meets with subordinate officers to resolve questions, conflicts, or problems. Coordinates the activities of the unit with the police lieutenant.
- Provides direct supervision to unit personnel. Initiates and recommends personnel actions, such as employee evaluations, employee counseling, and discipline. Recommends training programs to assigned personnel. Teaches classes to new recruits or veteran police officers, as required.
- Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars. Conducts meetings with staff to ensure information is disseminated to personnel in a timely, accurate manner. Meets with the Police Lieutenant, other unit commanders, Police Captains, and the Police Chief to recommend new and/or improved programs or operational policies. Makes presentations and sits on committees as assigned.
- Completes a variety of reports, studies, and correspondence, and makes recommendations to the Police Lieutenants on goals and objectives for the unit. Review reports, plans, and records before submission to the Police Lieutenant. Ensures that all unit records are accessible and maintained according to established policies and procedures.
- Responds to the more difficult requests for police assistance. Responsible for ensuring that staff is well trained and informed of the latest investigative techniques.
