Work History

Lead Supervisor Transmission Line Construction

National Grid USA Service Company
Waltham, MA
05.1985 - Current
  • 1985 to 2004 - Progressed from line worker apprentice, to first class line worker, to Crew leader, as a union employee, competent in all aspects of line construction associated with the position including live line work.
  • 2004 to 2010 - Accepted management position as a Senior Supervisor, managing assigned transmission construction projects, responsible for all phases of construction including, material delivery and inventory, right of way clearing, road building, environmental controls, matting installation, direction of line construction crews, quality control, and post project restoration.
  • 2010 to present - Lead Supervisor, responsible for multiple projects in the construction work plan. As a Lead Supervisor you are involved with early stage planning of projects, assisting all teams with different aspects of the projects such as, design, construction feasibility, access planning, abutter needs, outage planning, TOA entries, time line estimates, and final project close out. Working as a team member to ensure that the project is planned properly to limit delays and oversights that could add cost and scope creep to the projects, ensuring that the assigned Senior Supervisors are running the projects safely, efficiently, on time and on budget, while assisting with union, material, design, and sub contractor issues.
  • I have completed numerous large transmission projects over the years with zero injuries or environmental issues, all projects have been completed on time and on budget.
  • Recent projects as a Lead Supervisor

C129N Sky Wrap Installation , providing a fiber optic connection from Milbury 2 Substation to the Depot Street Substation, Milford Power, and the line of demarcation from NGRID to Eversource in the ROW.

SEMA (South Eastern MA line project) - This project completed the long needed tie connection between the legacy EUA lines and the New England Power lines, providing source from both entities and support of the closing of the two existing Montaup Electric and Brayton Point power stations.

I worked closely with the engineering team from Power Engineers to create a design and work plan to complete the project.

There were several steps to this project listed below:

Pottersville Substation tie ins - elimination of the Z1-Y2 line feed to Hathaway Substation - Complete rebuild of the existing Z1/Y2 line to become the new bifurcated X3S line - Complete rebuild of the existing dual circuit X3 /W4 line to become the new bifurcated W4S line - all new concrete foundation poles and new ACCC 477 wire - relocation of X3S and W4S lines to feed Hathaway Sub station - Relocation of 4 existing 115Kv lines to tie into the new Grand Army Switching Station - installation of new fiber optic wire on all existing lines connecting the new stations to the system.

I was detrimental to the early planning and final design of this project, as well as proper coordination of sequencing in a complex multiple step project, ensuring that all sequences were completed on time to move into the next phase, allowing all other departments involved to maintain their schedules as well.

In step one I was tasked with helping to create a plan to raise the existing structures/wire on 8 transmission lines to allow for the new Pottersville substation to be built below. Looking at the proposed plans I noticed that their was a sight to the right of the existing lines free of any obstruction that was designated as future 345 Kv expansion, I suggested to the design team to consider building the new station facing the right of way in that location and the stagger the lines in sequence into the station, you would have free space and could build the entire station with no obstruction and require zero need to raise the existing lines, once the station is complete you could cut one line at a time into the station, the final would have the proposed station location free of overhead lines and equipment and could be used for the future expansion. The team went back to the drawing board and returned with a design to incorporate my idea, the station was built and the lines cut in as described above.

The entire project took over two years of coordination to complete, all steps were completed on time, the project was completed on budget, ahead of schedule, and with Zero safety or environmental infractions.
