Typical Work

Assigns, instructs and check the work of lower-level specialists performing electrical and electronics maintenance, testing, installation, and repair on transportation and highway infrastructure;

Trains lower-level specialists in equipment usage, safety protocols, maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical and electronics equipment, components and systems;

Provides input for scheduling and planning of crews. Plans and prepares schedules; estimate of labor, materials and required equipment to accomplish assigned project work;

Conducts inspection of newly constructed electrical components to ensure compliance with applicable legal code requirements. Authorizes for acceptance and release for use or deny and determine corrections needed;

Provides interpretation and guidance of National Electrical Codes, National Fire Protection Association, state statutes and national, state and local regulations;

Directs and performs repair of malfunctioning traffic, bridge, tunnel, communications systems, ITS equipment and all electrical/electronic equipment within the state highway right of way on a 24-hour emergency call-out basis;

Communicates with Traffic Management Center regarding status of assigned projects, field problems, progress and future design work on ITS equipment;

Installs and maintains programmable logic controllers, network management, controller software and fiber networks;

Provides input and/or data for WSDOT standard specifications, standard plans, and preventative maintenance program, regional and/or statewide policies/procedures.

Trains and directs staff in work zone traffic control methods;

Serves as the agency subject-matter-expert with local agencies, project engineer offices, utility companies and contractors for construction or design of transportation electrical, electronic and communications projects;

  • Assisted in assembly, repair, installation and replacement of signs, sign components and sign posts to meet current legal specifications to comply with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. This includes the fabrication of maintenance signs for WSDOT, to include preparing aluminum, covering aluminum with pressure sensitive sheeting and cutting letters, symbols and numbers using a computer, plotter and die cutter.
  • Utilized a variety of equipment and tools such as hand diggers, portable power augers, pavement breakers, bucket trucks and hydraulic boom trucks with attached augers to perform assigned duties.
  • Performed routine maintenance work as required. Make field layout and install stop bars, arrows, railroad crossings, curbing crosswalks and center line markings with paint of thermo plastic materials.
  • Provided work zone traffic control (planning, setting signs, and flagging).
  • Plowed, sanded, stockpiled and deiced for snow and ice operations.
  • Operated grader with the wing plow and snow blower.
  • Performed sweeping of the roadway; shoulder and washout repair with heavy equipment; and drainage maintenance for ditches, culverts and catch basins.
  • Move and transport objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Install upon or make repairs to the Right of Way areas and State properties which include but are not limited to: roadway surface, shoulders, drainage structures, bridges, signs, fences, pavement markings, pothole repair, and guardrail.
  • Worked in the field in a variety of weather conditions. Be predicable and dependable at work.
  • Maintained and utilize a strong knowledge of traffic control guidelines and techniques. Traverse varied surfaces.
  • Required Qualifications Include: Valid Driver’s License, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without airbrakes restriction. National Commission certification of crane operators digger derricks license. Ability to work at heights exceeding 60 feet. Ability to lift, carry and maneuver sign material up to 50 pounds. Ability and Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays, and perform standby when necessary
