  • The Fleet Mechanic position is responsible for keeping vehicles and equipment in good running order and, when repairs are needed, returning the equipment to service quickly and economically. The work involves tasks in the mechanical and electronic repair and maintenance of but not limited to; garbage trucks, automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, trailers, back hoes, tractors, patrol cars, graders, rollers, pumps, hydraulic lifts, sweepers, vactor trucks, various water craft, and other assigned equipment. The work is performed under the general supervision of a shop supervisor, and is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion
  • Performs inspections, repairs, adjustments, and modifications on a wide range of vehicles and specialized equipment used for heavy construction and grounds maintenance, in the field and in a shop environment.
  • Perform all levels of emissions system diagnostics and repair as assigned, including gasoline, and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnoses problems and makes repairs to vehicle/equipment systems, including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, ignition, fuel, hydraulic and brakes.
  • Coordinates with users and management to ensure availability of vehicles and equipment in good working condition.
  • Assists in overseeing repairs or maintenance work done by contractors.
  • Effectively inputs and helps to maintain various records, including inspections, maintenance schedules, time and material costs, and parts inventory, into recordkeeping system(s) related to assigned department/division.
  • Maintains, repairs and rebuilds hydrostatic drive trains and hydraulic pump units.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and tune-ups to equipment and tools; replaces tires, bearings, plugs and filters. Cleans, sharpens, and adjusts mower cutting reels, blades and bed-knives.
  • Works with procurement personnel to ensure appropriate inventory.
  • Fabricates devices, tools, or implements needed using welding, grinding, and metal cutting tools and equipment
  • Performs structural welding work on steel and aluminum truck bodies and frames. Fabricates parts for vehicle upfitting and general repair.
  • Completes the in-servicing of new fleet vehicles which may include safety equipment, lighting, cone racks, fuel tanks, sign boards, tool boxes, police radios, emergency sirens, beacons, and other equipment as needed per department request.
  • Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition systems, electrical/electronic systems and components, transmissions, differentials, axle assemblies; repair and install hydraulic systems and tune engines
  • Perform general repair and overhaul work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, watercraft, gasoline and diesel engines, gasoline/electric and diesel/electric hybrid engines, electric motors, tractors, mechanical sweepers, graders, mowers, back hoes and other automotive mechanical and electronic equipment
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city staff, and the public.
