Attack Helicopter Crew Chief

  • Enlisted in the Army as an aircraft mechanic working on AH-1 attack helicopter (67Y). Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) and was assigned as a crew chief of an AH-1S "Black Betty".
  • Responsible for daily inspection, routine maintenance, and armament functions.
  • Conducted Phase Maintenance functions to ensure my assigned aircraft is battle ready at all times.
  • Accompanied my aircraft to the Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP) when pilots and co-pilots qualified on the range using the armaments of the AH-1S. The aircraft was armed with a three-barrel Vulcan 20 mm rotary cannon, 2 x 19 folding fin aerial rocket (FFAR) pods, and 2 x 4 missile launchers for the tube launched, optically tracked wire guided (TOW) missile.
  • After 12 months was promoted to Specialist, E-4. And then at 24 months promoted to Specialist, E5, and assigned to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS at Ft Benning, GA. 3 months later in April 1983, commissioned as officer in the Army Reserve as a 2nd LT.
