Special Education Paraprofessional

Millard Public School District
Omaha, NE
09.2019 - 03.2023
  • I was responsible for picking up groups of our special needs students, transporting them safely and on time to their schools to receive their specialized instruction and support. There were wide age ranges, and wide levels of ability, so it was very important to help the parent felt listened to, and to make the child feel safe and secure in their car seat, as needed, or safe in their regular seats on the van.
  • While driving these children, I was able to check on them very often, and pull over to address any behaviors that needed to be corrected, move the car seats if needed, and keep all children safe and i would turn it into a fun song to sing, or at times we just spoke a bit about what occurred and next, we would brainstorm ways, in a guided manner, about how to handle the situation differently the next time.
  • Trained new paraprofessionals on best practices for supporting students with special needs and behavioral challenges.
  • Collaborated with special education staff to develop engaging instructional materials tailored to diverse learning needs.
  • Assisted students with daily living skills, promoting independence and social integration within the classroom environment.
  • Monitored student progress and behavior, providing feedback to educators for timely intervention strategies.
  • Facilitated communication between parents and educators, addressing concerns and ensuring continuity of support services.

Mandt Training

I successfully completed Mandt Training in January of this year.  This was very helpful to my position, as we learned and reinforced different ways to build rapport with out clients, who have a tendency to not trust anyone representing DHHS.  We learned positive, productive ways to meet families wear they are and work from there.

Mandt emphasizes de-escalation techniques which we teach and practice with our families to use when we aren't working with them any longer.
