My mom runs and owns her own Nigerian catering business along with an event planning business on the side. Since I was thirteenth I have worked countless hours to help support my family. Being so involved in the business at a young age has taught me how to interact with people and most importantly how to manage my time as my school workload increased. Even though I have given up a lot of my personal life and time to support my family I wouldn't trade that for anything.
Diversify Our Narrative is a student-led grassroots campaign that aims to address systemic racism by petitioning for California school boards to include books and texts written by authors of color in their curriculum. In the midst of my anxious concern for racial issues, volunteering for this organization restored my faith in the ability of people to organize for meaningful change and shocked me of the earnest attitudes of my generation. As a member of my chapter's social media council, I have been able
to spark interest in alumni through outreach.
The Pomona Community Farmer Alliance runs a farmer's market that opens every Saturday to provide affordable, non-GMO, locally grown produce. Through various ventures, they support local farmers and are advocates for social and environmental justice. Since volunteering with the farmer's market in the summer of 2021, I have been able to broaden my understanding of social, and environmental issues. When I am not assisting the food access booth, I spend most of my time at the conversation station having discussions with community members concerning societal issues that affect our community.
Located in Ontario, Amy's farm provides educational experiences for children and families on sustainable agricultural practices. In partnership with the PFA, the food security initiative distributes quality produce to local families in need. While volunteering at the farm, I harvested produce and weeded the property before assisting in the assembly of food baskets for several local
families. Numerous times I was able to make deliveries with other volunteers to the families we harvested for. These deliveries gave me the privilege of visiting areas in my community I was unaware of.
