Skills

  • Medical and psychological assessment: proper medical and psychological assessment is the foundation of patient care I am able to extract information from a patient who can express very little; I use subjective complaints, objective observations, and collateral information to quickly formulate a picture of the patient's needs, and develop a plan of care
  • Precepting: enabling a new RN to find their potential through quickly learning their job duties is a much-loved skill of mine
  • Chart auditing: I have a keen sense of how to properly document, knowledge of what should and should not appear in a chart, and the ability to build personalized plans of care A properly audited chart can significantly improve a patient's level of care
  • Nursing staff leadership: Volunteering and working as a shift supervisor gives one the ability to gain new skills and evaluate the other side of issues
  • Taking vitals: proper vital sign collection and learning the interactions of the values is a learned skill If values are out of parameters, it is best to obtain them by a second method, such as auscultation or palpation
  • Direct nursing care: the fact that one obtained a degree did not remove their responsibility to complete such basic tasks as bathing, perineal care, assisting with activities of daily living, and making beds It leaves one with a feeling of fulfillment to follow a job from start to finish
  • Lab result interpretation: the values may appear routine and boorish at times, however, paying attention to trends in serial draws, or an abnormal level in a single area, may be the difference between life and death for the patient
