Elisa Zelaya
I graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor's degree in Animal Biology and worked as an entomology lab assistant at Bond Lab for two years. For about a year, I worked closely with canines and nonhuman primates as a study technician at Labcorp drug development. My primary skills are in animal handling, dosing, health checks, and maintenance, as well as various types of data collection by hand and on documentation software. I am familiar with following study protocols and standard operating procedures in a lab environment. I enjoy working in a team and I am accustomed to quick problem-solving in urgent situations which often require multi-tasking. My skills have been further bolstered as a microbiology technician at Merineux Nutrisciences up until the present.
Work History
Microbiology Technician
6 Months- I prepare samples for testing by weighing, enriching and placing them in the correct incubator
- I maintain the lab in ways including but not limited to cleaning/sanitizing equipment, restocking supplies and checking temperatures around the lab.
- I document for the incubation start time on a computer/in writing and adjust pH for samples as needed.
Study Technician I
1 Year- I collect and document various types of data including but not limited to: animal body weights, clinical observations, body temperature and food consumption.
- Animal husbandry and handling- experience working with canines and non human primates
- Dose animals through various routes including: oral gavage, subcutaneous, intravenous, capsule
- Anesthetize animals for procedures
- Run and set up studies by following standard operating procedures and protocols
- Maintain, clean animal enclosures and perform health checks
Bond Lab Assistant
2 Years- I worked on a computer to analyze and create three-dimensional images of the internal organs of millipedes.
- I assisted graduate students with their theses by collecting arthropods in the field and conducting data analysis on a computer.
- I worked at the Bohart Museum (same building as Bond Lab) to teach the public about exotic isopods.
- I wrote my final practicum report in this lab.
