Duties: Currently contracted through the Department of Homeland Security as a Protective Security Officer, working at federal locations such as courthouses, Social Security offices, ICE, and FBI buildings. As a Protective Security Officer, my duties include, but are not limited to, enforcing any and all rules, laws, guidelines, and regulations that are set forth by the federal government. My responsibilities are to ensure that all personnel and property are protected from any type of possible threat or harm.
As part of my daily uniform, I am required to wear a duty belt that includes carrying a firearm, a baton, handcuffs, and pepper spray, which I have been trained to use if the need arises. Because of the job, I have become accustomed to shift changes, working overtime, doing a split shift between different posts, and at times working irregular hours if needed. Part of my daily tasks includes writing reports of incidents that have occurred, giving and receiving pass-downs from other PSOs, and checking in with my commanding officer if needed. I have also become very knowledgeable about how to operate and monitor potential threats using the CCTV system that is provided. Every year, I take part in OC and baton refresher training, as well as range firearm training. I have also taken classes from our trained instructors in active shooter training, and advanced first aid and CPR techniques. I have also been trained in handcuffing techniques, x-ray machine usage, metal detectors, and surveying the area for suspicious or unattended items.
