“The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world.” -Paul Farmer
In 2020, I completed studies in medical anthropology, public health, and Spanish. I was always asked “what could you possibly do with all of that?” “Help people” was always my answer. I believe that a nurse is far beyond someone who works three twelve-hour shifts a week and goes home to live a normal life. A nurse is an empathetic individual who administers chemotherapy to a child actively dying of cancer. A nurse is a brave individual who applies pressure to a gunshot wound to the chest of a patient who walked into the emergency department. A nurse is a selfless individual who gives vaccines to those living in third-world countries. Having witnessed the versatility and patient-focused career nursing has to offer, there is no doubt in my mind that this is what I am meant to do with my life. I hope to be the nurse that makes her patients feel safe, heard, and understood regardless of where they come from and what they look like.
