• Perform assay techniques as required under minimal supervision and operate specific equipment like the BD Symphony Multi color flow cytometer

• Oversee day to day operations of the lab and ensure that problems encountered are resolved timely
• Reviewing research protocols to identify and plan for implications on lab operations, writing of protocol specific lab analytical plans
• Ensure laboratory compliance with Good clinical Lab practice and that accreditation is maintained
• Ensure laboratory compliance with Uganda virus institutional policies and safety regulations
• Supervises staff (generally ten or more employees) in a large and/or complex research laboratory
• Responsible for administrative, financial, staffing and planning aspects of the lab department

• Oversees the purchasing of lab supplies and major equipment, their installations, proper use and maintenance and service contracts
• Negotiates contracts and quotations, when needed
• Routinely develops research protocols
• Reviews and approves result reports for all clinical trials
• Conducts extensive literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their applicability to the research
• Writes and collaborates with other researchers on manuscripts, progress reports, abstracts, and other publications of research findings.

• Supervising execution and completion of activities in the flow cytometry section as per schedule of work drawn by the Laboratory Manager
• Ensuring that all test results (raw and result reports) are brought to the Laboratory Manager or Senior Scientist for Review and Approval
• Monitor Testing turnaround times in the Flow Cytometry section to ensure test result reporting is not delayed
• Manage stocks for reagents and consumables (both quantities and expiration dates) used in the Flow Cytometry Section
• Ensure that reagents are batch tested and recorded appropriately
• Spearhead installation/validation of new equipment/assays in the Flow Cytometry Section of the laboratory
• Oversee the technical training of interns, new and old laboratory staff or visitors prior to their starting specimen testing/ assay running in the Flow Cytometry section
• Give technical support to scientist/personnel requiring such assistance while using the LSR II
• Help in drawing costs associated with use of the Flow Cytometry section by other organizations/scientists
• Supervise equipment maintenance; ensure maintenance logs are completed in the Flow Cytometry room
• Ensure that routine External Quality Assessment specimens in the Flow Cytometry Section are run and reported in time
• Contribute to maintaining of the general laboratory supplies and reagent stocks.

• Oversee the safety of the UVRI-IAVI laboratory personnel and ensuring Lab quality systems are improved and accreditation is maintained.

Supervising technical staff during bench testing of clinical and research specimens

• Conduct technical trainings of Laboratory personnel and interns
• Ensuring reagents and kits and sample inventory records are correctly prepared/updated, kept at correct temperature
• Ensure that that laboratory equipment is routinely maintained, cleaned, and operating as per manufacturers recommendations.
