  • Operation and vigilance of Central Plant equipment which includes boilers, chillers, emergency generators, medical air compressors, vacuum pumps, water pumps, water softeners, cooling towers. oxygen tanks, nitrous oxide tanks and fuel levels.
  • Ensured optimal performance of boilers, chillers, and generators through routine inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform maintenance or repairs to plant equipment such as filter changing on AHU's, oil changes, belt replacements, greasing rotating equipment, pump couplers, motor replacements to light bulb replacement.
  • Conduct water test analysis checking for conductivity, hardness, sulfite levels, PH and adding salt to brine tanks making adjustments to chemicals pumps to keep the water chemistry in good standings for steam efficiency.
  • Respond to house calls during after hours including bed deliveries, clogged sinks or toilets leaking faucets adjusting room temperatures or thermostats to replacement of televisions, furniture while monitoring the central plant.

  • Start/shut down monitor gas boiler, steam generator, thermal oxidizer, cooling tower, hot oil heaters, air compressors
  • Daily check of plant water conditions (conductivity, PH, Hardness) add salt to water softeners
  • Perform PM's on boiler, cooling tower, air compressors, agitator mixers
  • Respond to emergency calls during off hours
  • Test fire system equipment, risers fire pumps, and booster jockey pumps.
  • Perform lock out tag out procedures
  • Conduct confined space entries to perform repairs, or analyze equipment integrity.
  • Repair or replace valves plug , gate ,ball, butterfly valves, viking or desmi pumps , pump gear boxes, pump flexible couplings, and mechanical seals.
  • Rebuild or troubleshoot Bray/Sharpe pneumatic air valve actuators
  • Thread new piping from 1/2 to 2" for process lines or steam lines.
  • Keep inventory and order parts as needed.
  • Ensure everyone is working safe throughput the plant.

Machinist Mate

  • Light off / shut down Main Engines, Turbine Generators, water distilling units, pumps, bilge eductors, and oil purifiers.
  • Qualified Shaft alley patrol, cold iron watch, distilling units, lower level operator, upper level operator, and steam plant operator.
  • Take hourly rounds and readings on machinery equipment.
  • Purify main engine's and turbine generator's oil sumps daily.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on steam plant equipment. (valve replacements, gasket replacements, check strainers, replace zinc plates, add oil to equipment
  • Train new arriving sailors on steam plant operation qualifications.
  • Respond to steam plant casualties (loss of oil, hot bearing, hot condenser)
  • Complete weekly firefighting exercises and propulsion plant drills.
