Truman State University
08.2024 - Current
Student instructor of muscle, organ, bone, and other human anatomical features
Experienced in memorization of complex anatomical features
Cultivated effective communication skills and experience with teaching techniques
Responsible for technical care and preservation of human cadavers, with extensive knowledge of the protocols involved
Volunteer Research Assistant
A.T. Still University
05.2023 - Current
Working in the laboratory of Dr
Priscilla Phillips; contributing to a variety of research projects centered around the bacterial pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG-W83)
Gained experience in computer-based data collection and analysis of mass spectrometry data to identify significant protein changes within mutant PG-W83 strains
Was trained in employing aseptic laboratory techniques and cultivating facultative and obligate anaerobes
Observed or assisted in a variety of experiments using molecular biology techniques to generate and validate PG-W83 mutants
Observed or assisted in a variety of experiments using culture-based and molecular biology-based approaches to investigate PG-W83 mutant vs
Wildtype phenotypic characteristic in response to environmental changes
Some of my early contributions were acknowledged in a poster presentation at the 15th annual Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Symposium (IBRS) on Nov 11, 2023, at ATSU entitled 'Growth, Survival, and Persistence Characteristics of P
Gingivalis W83'
Later work will be presented at the 16th annual IBRS meeting in November 2024 in Kirksville and at the American Society of Microbiology ASM Microbe June 2025 meeting in Los Angeles
Clinician Researcher Development Program (CRDP) Internship
A.T. Still Research Institute
05.2024 - 08.2024
Paid internship under the principal investigator Dr
Priscilla Phillips
Lead participant in the investigation of bacterial persistence mechanisms of the pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG W83)
Conducted bacterial growth curve and survival curve assays in context of sublethal exposure to tetracycline and metronidazole antibiotics using both optical density (OD550) and viable colony formation units (CFU) approaches
Prepared lyophilized concentrated culture filtrate (CCF), based on the hypothesis that bacteria secrete factors that regulate persister cell development in bacterial populations
Developed protocols and optimized assays to quantify changes in the percentage of persister cells amongst PG W83 cultures, with or without CCF treatment, followed by an overnight exposure to sublethal dose of antibiotics of samples collected at select time-points during growth
Gained experience in custom primer design for RT-qPCR analysis of PG RNA targets putatively involved in bacterial persistence based on published studies and using DNA, RNA, and protein databases and bioinformatic online tools
The selected PG targets were identified by sequence homology to genes identified in other bacteria (e.g., E
Coli, Vibrio sp., Staphylococcus sp.) reported to regulate persistence mechanisms (stringent response, SOS response) or associated mechanisms (e.g., quorum sensing, NO stress, ROS stress)
Gained experience in data analysis, creating figures and tables, interpreting experimental outcomes, and generating reports for future dissemination in presentations and publications

Volunteer Research Assistant
Truman State University
09.2022 - 05.2023
Working in the laboratory of Dr
Joyce Patrick on the study of gene function within Bacillus subtilis
Investigated the yisR gene mutant that had been suggested to function within nutrient stressor response and sporulation mechanisms
Created a knockout-bacterial mutant using PCR and bacteriophage transduction techniques to characterize the role of yisR in vitro
Compared culture growth trends between mutant and wildtype strains under nutrient rich and limited conditions using optical density (OD550) and colony formation units (CFU)
Applied and practiced concepts and techniques previously taught in biology and chemistry lab courses
Supported previous hypothesis of yisR’s involvement in B
Subtillis survival under nutrient-limited conditions
My contributions were acknowledged in a recent seminar presented by Dr
Patrick at ATSU’s Basic Science seminar series on Oct 6, 2023, entitled 'Biofilm formation by the plant-protective bacterium Bacillus subtilis in the presence of pesticides'
