Railroad Conductor / Locomotive Engineer

Burns Harbor Railroad

Railroad Characteristics-

  • Shortline railroad in an industrial setting.
  • Contracted switching operation for the Port of Indiana Burns Harbor.
  • Very busy and congested area for all modes of transportation.
  • Customers mostly based on the steel industry, as well as transloading and storage cars.
  • Other than main track, restricted speed territory.
  • Working closely with Norfolk Southern and Indiana Harbor Belt for railcar interchange.

Duties-

  • Working both as a conductor and locomotive engineer.
  • Switching cars in a very busy and congested area requiring heightened awareness and safety precautions.
  • Coordinating and working closely with all of the customers, contractors, interchanging railroads, and port officials to safely and efficiently move railcars.
  • Cross trained to inspect and perform minor repairs on locomotives as needed, such as brake shoe replacement.
  • Cross trained on car clerking platforms made by Wabtec.

  • Signal engineers to begin train runs, stop trains, or change speed, using telecommunications equipment or hand signals.
  • Receive information regarding train or rail problems from dispatchers or from electronic monitoring devices.
  • Direct and instruct workers engaged in yard activities, such as switching tracks, coupling and uncoupling cars, and routing inbound and outbound traffic.
  • Keep records of the contents and destination of each train car, and make sure that cars are added or removed at proper points on routes.
