Equine Nurse

  • 500 hours of direct veterinary experience thus far working as an equine nurse for the inpatient horses at the hospital.
  • Perform physical exams on all patients as well as collect blood, feces, or mucus samples to submit for lab analysis.
  • Ensure patient comfort while in hospital, by monitoring mentation, feed and water intake, and excretions. Abnormalities documented and doctors notified when necessary. Additionally, learned efficient patient transfer between nursing shifts, to ensure all patient information is communicated properly.
  • Place and start IV catheter fluids, calculate drug dosages, draw up/prepare, and administer treatments and medications via oral, IV, and intramuscular injections.
  • Assist veterinary students and doctors with treatments of inpatients, as well as working up emergency cases of colic, lacerations, choke, and more.
  • Basic cleaning and restocking responsibilities within our office to ensure quick access to required tools.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

  • Veterinary Genetics Researcher in Dr. Carrie Finno's lab, with a focus on equine genetics
  • Conducted a validation study for a disease known as Kissing Spines, which had a previously identified SNP variant
  • Performed PCR and gel electrophoresis on DNA samples that were extracted from whole blood, before sending amplified samples for Sanger Sequencing
  • Analyzed Sanger Sequencing data to determine variants, and ultimately was able to refute the previously published study on Kissing Spines in horses. This data was presented at the UCD Undergraduate Research Conference in 2025.
  • Helped care for mouse colony, including feeding, breeding, weighing, and general health checks, in addition to giving supportive care (SubQ saline injections) for mice receiving chemotherapy treatments. Additionally, proficient in ear tagging and sexing of the mice.
  • Participated in regular lab meetings, presentations, and journal club reviews, and supported graduate researchers with their projects.
