Received the Presidential Volunteer Award two years in a row through the consistent volunteering I committed myself to.
Throughout the past 4 years of my high school career, I spent the majority of my school holidays volunteering somewhere. If I wasn't spending weeks at a time at the senior day care center helping elderly patients with physical rehabilitation and filing patient records, I was at the my local pet shelter walking dogs and helping cats with cleaning their litter boxes. When I started volunteering, my ultimate goal was to volunteer a minimum of 100 hours so that I could meet the requirements to receive the Volunteer award. However, in the process of volunteering, I ended up falling in love with the sense of compassion and responsibility that it provided me. I gained effective communication skills among different age groups, learned to become more patient with the elderly, broadened my experiences with fast-paced environments (such as a kitchen), and discovered how to engage myself further with others. Thus, I began to view volunteering as passion of mine, rather than just a means to become a Volunteer Award Recipient.
