PERSONAL STATEMENT

  • I chose to major in Family Science and Human Development because I have always been interested in how children grow and how their environments shape their development. My interest became more focused once I began working in elementary and early childhood settings, where I was able to see firsthand how relationships, structure, and individualized support influence a child’s academic, social, and emotional growth. These experiences confirmed my desire to pursue a career working with children and families.
  • I completed my internship in a preschool classroom for students with physical disabilities located within an elementary school. This experience gave me early exposure to supporting children with a range of physical, developmental, and communication needs, including students who were non-verbal. It also taught me the importance of patience, creativity, and individualized support. One experience that stood out to me occurred during a classroom “vet unit,” where students participated in center-based pretend play. I worked closely with a student who had sensory and other developmental disabilities. He was initially uncomfortable touching his stuffed animal during pretend veterinary care activities.
  • To support him, I modeled the activity using my own stuffed animal and adapted the task so he could participate in a way that felt safe. Instead of requiring immediate physical contact, I encouraged him to use vet tools to interact with the animal. Over time, he became more comfortable and eventually was able to touch the stuffed animal directly. This experience showed me how small, intentional adjustments can significantly impact a child’s confidence and engagement.
  • I currently work with elementary-aged students in both early childhood and special education settings, supporting classroom routines, transitions, behavior guidance, and social development. I assist with daily activities such as circle time, lunch and recess supervision, and structured learning tasks. Building trust with students and helping them navigate expectations in a supportive environment has been one of the most meaningful aspects of my work.
  • Throughout my undergraduate experience, I have balanced academic responsibilities with consistent employment in educational settings, which has strengthened my time management and commitment to my education. I have also contributed financially toward my college education, which has required discipline and perseverance while pursuing my degree.
  • Overall, my academic and professional experiences have reinforced my passion for Family Science and Human Development. I am committed to continuing my education and building a career supporting children and families in meaningful and lasting ways.
