I am a former United States Marine who retired in 1983 before becoming a Compton Police Officer and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Investigator from 1985 to 2017. While a law Enforcement Officer, I was the recipient of over seventy-five commendations including twice being named the California Officer of the year. After retiring, I became a self-published author of two books, which have won a combined thirty-five Independent book awards, including the Independent Author's Network Grand Prize in 2022.
My memoir, "Black, White, and Gray All Over: A Black Man's Odyssey in Life and Law Enforcement," chronicles life as an African-American man during the sixties, and seventies in Detroit, Michigan during which time I was oftentimes on the wrong end of the justice system. An epiphany while I was homeless for a short period led to my becoming a Police Officer which led to me understanding that life is not just black and white but a mixture of the two. The judges of the IAN Book Award competition saw my tale as a riveting one that should be an inspiration for people of all races.
