I'm a student athlete home for the summer trying to get patient care experience to prepare me for my ultimate goal of becoming a physician. For just being a freshman in college and already having over a year of experience in a health care setting, I feel like I'm very valuable for my age.
I would schedule new patient appointments, surgeries, and follow-up appointments with Dr. Souheil Haddad and Dr. Marshall Poor. I would talk with insurance companies over the phone about whether or not the clinic accepted that insurance. If we did, I had to check the doctors specific list to see which doctor to put them with.
I assisted little kids in developing their skills on and off the court. I hosted "clinics" working on basic fundamentals. I worked under my long time trainer Derrick Cross, where our focus was skill progression in young kids, teaching work ethic, and expanding their love for the game of basketball.
This internship was through my school. We had a class that allowed us to choose a cite to go and learn. With mine being in the medical field there wasn't much hands on, but I was able to shadow all different types of doctors throughout the day. I watched countless surgeries, and learned so much. I followed anesthesiologists through their process, from preop to post-op. All the doctors were there helping me, explaining to me what they were doing and why, and some even let me get very close looks. For example, I was able to look into a microscope in an eye surgery and a discectomy. I was able to hold and look at an amputated finger. And I spent a lot of time in the back with the anesthesiologist learning about different drugs and what they do, and what everything on the anesthesia cart is and does.
