General:
- Internship experience equivalent to a GS-05 position.
- Assisted with maintaining the Education Facility, preparing and organizing educational supplies, and compiling inventory lists of educational equipment.
- Provided informal interpretation in visitor centers by providing information about points of interest, rules and guidelines, maps and directions, current events, answering questions, and encouraging rapport about the park.
- Responded to email, mail, and telephone information requests at the visitor center.
- Performed all opening and closing procedures at the visitor center including stocking the information desk, opening the register, and raising the flag, etc.
- Performed all sales on the Eastern National Store register and close down the register at the end of the day according to SOP guidelines.
- Attendance of local and/or online training by the National Park Service or affiliated organizations (i.e., CPR, Operational Leadership, interpretation, Wilderness Workshop, etc.).
- Operation of a government motor vehicle as a part of official duties.
- Complete administrative tasks such as compiling statistical data for education grant reporting.
- Knowledge of and proper following of SOPs and JHAs regarding formal and informal programs within the park and for everyday work.
- Attendance of weekly meetings with other members of the division regarding park updates and individual updates. Provide a safety talk about a hazard or risk of the job or park in the meeting when scheduled.
- Assistance/shadowing of grant writing for educational funding.
Interpretation:
- Conducted summer interpretation operations, including the creation and facilitation of multiple audience-centered interpretative programs, summer youth programs, and Junior Ranger events.
- Facilitation of a weekly Wilderness Canoe Expedition on Little Beaver Lake and Beaver Lake in the Beaver Basin Wilderness area. Trips include up to eight full canoes or up to 24 people.
- Canoe trips lasted 4 hours and include 3.5 miles of padding and a guided hike to Lake Superior. Programs include basic canoe paddling training, Leave No Trace, canoe safety, interpretive stops about wildlife, habitats, and the history of the lake and surrounding areas.
- Revision of the interpretive outline and SOP for the Wilderness Canoe Program highlighting Leave No Trace Principles.
- Prepared and researched lesson plan outlines for formal and informal interpretive programs.
- Facilitated formal and informal interpretive programs, both independently and in a team environment, for diverse audiences to inform and educate visitors throughout the season.
- Programs Facilitated:
- Au Sable Lighthouse Tours including an interpretive grounds tour and an interpretive tour of the top of the lighthouse.
- Pop-up programs including angling, geology, logging, survival, bats, backpacking 101, Leave No Trace, etc.
- Shipwreck Sunset Evening 3-mile Guided Hike with a lighthouse tour and walk back with real flame lanterns
- Trivia with a Ranger including topics on wildlife, geology, history, invasive species, bats etc.
- Evening Campground Amphitheater Programs.
Environmental Education:
- Facilitated and provided group management for K-4 field trips for up to 100 kids throughout the season at the park and partner facilities with programs including sensory walks, animal tracks, tree investigation, etc.
- Facilitation of fourth grade afield program reaching over 250 children while educating about adaptations and the scientific method.
- Provided early childhood programs at community libraries and preschools; Ranger Read Along program with topics on pollinators, owls, etc.
- Facilitated, researched, planned, and designed curriculum-based lesson plans, media materials, standards-based activity ideas, and publications for schools grades K-5.
- Developed programs on a variety of topics using creative techniques and following interpretation models/guidelines.
- Assisted in evaluating educational initiatives, leading to improved visitor engagement and program effectiveness.
Law Enforcement (Non-Commissioned):
- Enforcement of park rules as necessary during formal and informal programs.
- Relaying violations of park rules and regulations to Law Enforcement Rangers.
- Proper radio use knowledge for emergencies, for backcountry travel, and when necessary for programs.
- Rove the front-country and backcountry to initiate verbal communication with visitors to provide informal interpretation, education on park rules, or guidance (e.g., roving in the field and providing roving information to visitors).
- Ride-alongs with Law Enforcement as time allowed.
