Learned how to:
My passion for animals began at a very young age. I grew up always having at least two or three dogs in the house. At the age of 8, I sparked an interest in horses and began taking weekly horseback riding lessons. At age 12, I joined the 4-H club at the farm, where I was taking riding lessons. Not long after I joined 4-H, I started seriously considering pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. Throughout middle and high school, I used the opportunities presented to me in 4-H to gain as much knowledge and experience with as many different species of animals as possible.
After high school, I chose to continue my pursuit of a career in veterinary medicine by enrolling as a Pre-Veterinary Medicine major at the University of Delaware. Given my passion for horses, I added a minor in Equine Science after my first year of school. While at UD, I also discovered an interest in animal nutrition. However, my time at the University of Delaware was challenging. I struggled to adjust to college life as a commuting student, had difficulty maintaining a school-life balance, and started to experience burnout. As a result of the struggle, my grades suffered a bit, but by the middle of the fall semester of my sophomore year, I found a system that worked for me. During my summers, I shadowed a few small animal and equine veterinarians to gain some veterinary experience.
I decided that it would be in my best interest to take a gap year after graduating from college to gain more veterinary experience before applying to vet school. After graduation, I worked for a few months at a small animal practice until an opportunity to work at Unionville Equine presented itself.
My current career goal is to work as an equine veterinarian at a general ambulatory practice. However, in addition to my interest in nutrition, I have discovered an interest in equine sports medicine and would consider specializing in those fields.
