Work History

Post-doctoral Research Associate

Purdue University
2021.05 - Current

I was given a range of responsibilities within the comprehensive sorghum research program directed by Professor Gebisa Ejeta. Within this charge,

  • Served as a co-PI on a project funded by USAID/SMIL phase II and took the lead on planning and implementation of annual activities, writing and submitting regular reports, and making presentations to the board of directors of SMIL II project
  • Provided backup support on the BMGF funded integrated Striga management (ISC II) project to the collaborating programs in three regions in Ethiopia
  • Conducted basic research in gene identification, and characterization of critical traits – drought, Striga, and biomass feedstock
  • Conducted genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) on PP37 MAGIC population - identified new loci associated with Striga resistance
  • Managed a program on the synthesis of hybrids for multi-location field experiments with hybrids derived from germplasm bred for Striga resistance and drought tolerance
  • Designed field experiments on different sets of hybrids targeting drought, Striga, and feedstock (forage/biomass) traits
  • Evaluated experimental hybrids each cropping season for agronomic desirability (plant aspect), yield potential, and tolerance to abiotic and biotic constraints
  • Conducted statistical analysis of trials and selection of hybrids to be advanced to the next stage of evaluation and preparing reports to donors
  • Organized, and coordinated international testing of elite drought and Striga resistant sorghum hybrids across 13 African countries (as part of the ISC II project and in collaboration with CIMMYT).

Graduate Student

Purdue University
2016.05 - 2021.05
  • Conducted genome-wide association analysis of diverse sorghum germplasm and identified major genes that confer resistance against grain mold disease
  • Conducted transcriptome analysis of developing sorghum grain from cultivars resistant and susceptible to grain mold
  • Mapped resistance genes against sorghum anthracnose disease

Breeder and National Coordinator

Ethiopian Institute Of Agricultutral Research
2013.11 - 2016.05
  • Coordinated sorghum and millet research program and served as sorghum breeder
  • Developed and tested nationwide elite varieties of sorghum for drought, Striga and other adaptive traits
  • Implemented and served as co-PI for the project, “iMashilla”: A targeted approach to sorghum improvement with aims at modernizing the Ethiopian sorghum breeding program to incorporate new technologies in areas of molecular genetics, breeding, crop physiology and modeling, statistics, trial design, electronic data capture and storage, image-based phenotyping (a University of Queensland and EIAR collaborative research)
  • Implemented collaborative grant projects (ISC I, HOPE, AGRA, SMIL)
  • Designed and supervised development of a multi-parent advanced generation inter-cross (MAGIC) population of Ethiopian sorghum landraces in Ethiopia.
